Alfred Street Baptist Church is taking its business elsewhere!
The historic Black church in Virginia is ending its contract with The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts due to the center's new leadership.
Church leadership said it would no longer host its annual Christmas performance at the venue.
The change in policy was announced on the church's website and was reiterated by its pastor, Howard-John Wesley, during worship services on Sunday.
The statement on the church's website read in part, "We believe that the new leadership’s opposition to the Kennedy Center’s long-standing tradition of honoring artistic expression across all backgrounds is misaligned with our unwavering commission to proclaim and practice the transformative and redemptive love of Jesus, to pursue justice, to promote equality, to embrace the gift of diversity, and to care for all of creation."
The Kennedy Center announced on Feb. 8th that its board elected U.S. President Trump as its new chair.
The change in leadership and its antagonistic political agenda towards vulnerable communities caused several others to pull their association with the Kennedy Center, including TV producer Shonda Rhimes, actress and comedian Issa Rae, opera singer Renee Fleming, and artist Ben Folds.
The church has decided that principle supersedes its long-standing relationship with the Center.
