Bishop Patrick Wooden has responded to narrowly missing the Church of God in Christ General Assembly board.

Wooden is the Senior Pastor of the Upper Room Church of Christ in Raleigh, NC.

He's built a reputation for being an outspoken proponent of conservative issues. His rhetoric, especially as it pertains to LGBT issues, can sometimes be perceived by some as shocking and offensive.

During the 2024 election cycle, he was a public supporter of embattled North Carolina gubernatorial candidate, Mark Robinson, who lost in a landslide to rival Josh Stein.

Members of the General Assembly were voted on during Holy Convocation, where John Drew Sheard was re-elected as Presiding Bishop.

The 12-members of the General Assembly include the following:

  • Presiding Bishop J. Drew Sheard of Michigan

  • Bishop Jerry W. Macklin of California

  • Bishop Lawrence M. Wooten of Missouri

  • Bishop Elijah H. Hankerson, III-Missouri

  • Bishop Linwood E. Dillard-Tennessee

  • Bishop Frank A. White-New York

  • Bishop Darrell L. Hines-Wisconsin

  • Bishop Michael E. Hill, Sr.-Michigan

  • Bishop Brandon B. Porter-Tennessee

  • Bishop Prince E. Bryant, Sr. -Texas

  • Bishop Jerry L. Maynard, Sr. -Tennessee

  • Bishop Charles H. McClelland-Wisconsin

In his response to his loss, Bishop Wooden stated that he didn't respond like a "sissy" (a perjorative term for an oversensitive boy or man).

Nevertheless, he seemed please that he placed 13th in his first outing to become a General Assembly member.
