President Joe Biden awarded the nation’s highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, to 19 people on Saturday,January 4, 2024.
The medal is presented to people “who have made exemplary contributions to the prosperity, values, or security of the United States, world peace, or other significant societal, public or private endeavors,” according to a White House statement.
The 19 individuals receiving awards were:
Robert F. Kennedy, former Attorney General (posthumously)
Gov. George Romney, former Michigan Governor and the father of former Sen. Mitt Romney(posthumously)
Hillary Clinton, former Senator and former Secretary of State
George Soros, donor that supported causes to strengthen democracy
Anna Wintour, famed Vogue Editor-in-Chief
Ralph Lauren, fashion designer
José Andrés, famed chef who evolutionized the way food aid reaches communities affected by natural disasters and conflict around the world
Michael J. Fox, outspoken actor who champion medical causes
Denzel Washington, famed actor who plays his characters with dignity
Earvin “Magic” Johnson, former NBA player, HIV activist, and entrepreneur
Lionel Messi, soccer superstar
Bono, a musician and humanitarian and AIDS activist
Bill Nye, Planetary Society CEO and television host
Jane Goodall, world-famous conservationist
Fannie Lou Hamer, Civil rights icon (posthumously)
Ash Carter, former Defense Secretary (posthumously)
Tim Gill, LGBT advocate
David Rubenstein, private equity leader
George Stevens Jr., American Film Institute and Kennedy Center Honors founder
