President Joe Biden awards the Presidential Medal of Freedom to 19 people

President Joe Biden awarded the nation’s highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, to 19 people on Saturday,January 4, 2024.


The medal is presented to people “who have made exemplary contributions to the prosperity, values, or security of the United States, world peace, or other significant societal, public or private endeavors,” according to a White House statement.


The 19 individuals receiving awards were:

  1. Robert F. Kennedy, former Attorney General (posthumously)

  2. Gov. George Romney, former Michigan Governor and the father of former Sen. Mitt Romney(posthumously)

  3. Hillary Clinton, former Senator and former Secretary of State

  4. George Soros, donor that supported causes to strengthen democracy

  5. Anna Wintour, famed Vogue Editor-in-Chief

  6. Ralph Lauren, fashion designer

  7. José Andrés, famed chef who evolutionized the way food aid reaches communities affected by natural disasters and conflict around the world

  8. Michael J. Fox, outspoken actor who champion medical causes

  9. Denzel Washington, famed actor who plays his characters with dignity

  10. Earvin “Magic” Johnson, former NBA player, HIV activist, and entrepreneur

  11. Lionel Messi, soccer superstar

  12. Bono, a musician and humanitarian and AIDS activist

  13. Bill Nye, Planetary Society CEO and television host

  14. Jane Goodall, world-famous conservationist

  15. Fannie Lou Hamer, Civil rights icon (posthumously)

  16. Ash Carter, former Defense Secretary (posthumously)

  17. Tim Gill, LGBT advocate

  18. David Rubenstein, private equity leader

  19. George Stevens Jr., American Film Institute and Kennedy Center Honors founder
