Donald Trump, who is the oldest person to be sworn in as president of the U.S., did not place his left hand on the Bibles being held by his wife, Melania Trump.
Viewers of the official swearing-in ceremony noticed the flagrant mishap and were quick to react. One Twitter (aka, X) user commented, "A con man sells Bible under his name, but can't put his hand on the bible."
Trump was sworn in by Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts on January 20th.
As many noticed, First lady Melania Trump held two Bibles — one given to Mr. Trump by his mother, and other was the Lincoln Bible, which was used at Abraham Lincoln's 1861 inauguration.
Article VI of the U.S. Constitution states that "all executive and judicial Officers, both of the United States and of the several States, shall be bound by Oath or Affirmation, to support this Constitution."
While it is tradition for incoming presidents to place their hand on a Bible while taking the official oath of office, it is not a legal requirement. Moreover, the omission should not excuse him of his fidelity to God and the US constitution.
It is unclear why the President took his oath of office without placing his hand on the Bible. Nevertheless, one can only imagine the public outrage if President Obama or Kamala Harris had made the same public faux pas.
Interestingly, the new president is selling his own "God Bless the USA" Bibles, which retail for $59.99 each.
